Ectopia cordis is a congenital malformation in which the heart of the newborn is abnormally located, either partially or totally, outside of the thorax. The heart can be found along aspectrum of anatomical locations, including the neck, chest, or abdomen.
Statistics show that it affects just eight in every million births, and in most cases, the heart protrudes outside the chest through a split sternum. According to Metro, 90% of those born with the condition are either stillborn or dies after a few days.
Luckily, surgery increases the chance of survival.
The newborn’s parents, Sushma Padmakar, 22 years old and husband, Basant Padmakar, who works as an electrician, said they were confused by the condition at first.
“The God has blessed us with a baby but I don’t know whether to call it a blessing or a curse that has fallen upon us,” Basant said.
“I am a poor man. We can barely afford two square meals a day. But I will do everything to save my child. We are feeling so helpless,” he added.
As the local hospital in their district was not equipped to handle such a serious case, the babywas referred to the Government medical college and hospital in Jabalpur.
At present, a medical team has been set-up under the supervision of pediatric urologist Dr Vikesh Agarwal.
Surgeons operated on the baby last March 19 and doctors are optimistic about her chances.
In a similar case, one named Huang Rongming was born with ectopia cordis, where his heart bulges in the abdomen. For his entire life, he was unable to play outside as a child and was carried from a farm in rural China to school. After 24 years, Rongming had undergone corrective surgery and was able to start living a normal life.
